Dementia/Alzheimer: A Question for You

Do any of you feel like your family members have forgotten you? We are suffering from this problem- no phone calls from them and no visits- it is like our mother does not exist to them anymore. We were wondering to those that are having this problem, how do you deal with it? Any suggestions would be wonderful.

My family has been suffering from the same issues. Some family members say that it is too hard for them to watch someone they knew and loved suffer like this. They don’t seem to understand that we feel the same way and could use the support. My heart goes out to you and all others suffering with this issue.

I was hoping you could help me. My father came home from adult day care yesterday very upset. After a while he told me that one of the aides called him stupid. Now, he doesn’t want to go back. Do you have any advice on how to handle this?

Most important, you must tell your father that dementia has nothing to do with being stupid. You must reinforce that dementia is an illness and not a sign of stupidity. Secondly, the aide in question must be reported to the adult day care center. The behavior of this aide is totally unacceptable and someone like this should not be working with any type of patient. Tell your father that you will be reporting her and maybe that will make him feel better. Please make sure the institution takes care of this matter, because this is not acceptable.

I have heard that taking Vitamin D can prevent dementia. What do you think?

There have been many studies involving the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and dementia. Currently, there is no definite answer to this question.

I have been reading a lot about Vitamin B12 preventing dementia. What is your opinion on this vitamin? Thanks so much- I love reading your articles and it has helped my family so much. Thanks again.

A lot of studies are being done on Vitamin B12 and its relation to Dementia/Alzheimer. As of now, there is no definite answer to this question, however, hopefully with continued research there will be an answer soon. There is a form of dementia that is caused by Vitamin B12 deficiency, but a simple blood test will tell you if your loved one has dementia caused by B12 deficiency and if a supplement is needed. Please discuss with your physician.
